Picture this: It's Sunday, February 5, 2012, and all your friends are over to watch the big game -- on your small TV. You hardly have room in your fridge for beer, and when you try to order pizzas, you find out that the delivery is backed up for over an hour. The bag of stale pretzels you set out isn't going to keep this crowd happy. There are rumblings that they're all going to abandon your party when you're not looking and head to the nearest sports bar.
Don't worry! You can escape this nightmare! You have just over two weeks, and it's time to get ready. This is the biggest football game of the year, so it deserves a little planning ahead.
Let's start with your entertainment center. The game is going to be broadcast in high-def, so if you're not ready for that, it's time to shop for televisions. How do you know what size TV to get? Multiply the distance in feet that you sit from the TV by five, and that's approximately the size in inches that would be best. In my living room, I sit 7 feet from the TV, so something around 35 inches is just right.
Next, let's make sure you look like a host. As of today, the Patriots, 49ers, Ravens and Giants are still competing to be the final two. Be sure to pick up some team gear to show your team spirit. A hat, scarf, jacket or even jewelry can make the day that much more fun. Team coasters will get everyone in on the excitement.
Now it's on to the menu. I think this is a day to heat up the grill, even if there is a foot of snow on the ground. It's easy to make burgers for a crowd with a patty maker, and a grilling basket makes cooking several at once a breeze. A side of nachos is easy to make if you have a small slow cooker to heat queso for a crowd. Make sure you balance it all out with a vegetable tray.
Snacks are essential for a game that lasts this long. People like crunchy food when they are nervous, so if you anticipate a nail-biter, have something like popcorn ready. The stuff from a microwave is good, but let me tempt you with an antique-style popcorn machine. Sweet snacks are also a necessity, and I can't think of anything better than beer-flavored peanut brittle, chocolate dipped pretzels and "chocolate salami," something that has to be experienced to be believed.
Last but not least, you need to think about drinks. If you're ready to go big, then it's time to buy a full-size kegerator, so you can serve beer on tap. If you're thinking more about keeping sodas and bottles nearby, a mini-fridge will suffice. Be sure to assess your glassware situation, but know that there's no shame in stocking up on plastic cups.
Are you ready for the big game? Do you have different menu ideas? Which team are you rooting for?
