Entertaining Kids on a Winter's Day

Feel like building a snowman? You're not alone. Now that we've settled into the long stretch of winter, when cabin fever hits and any patch of blue sky makes us want to head outside, winter sports seem particularly inviting. They're a good way to entertain children, and since kids get bored and jittery when they're stuck inside all the time (making nearby adults a bit jittery, too), it's fortunate that many winter activities don't require a trip to the mountains and hours of planning. So bundle up and spend an afternoon playing with the kids. These activities are fun for adults, too.

I love how snowmen start popping up all over the neighborhood within a few hours of a good snowfall. Obviously, kids don't need to leave home to play in the snow, and with Mom's help, they can build a great snow fort for their snowmen to guard. Use this snow-brick maker to build a fort that will withstand the most enthusiastic snowball fight.

When kids outgrow the backyard, or just need more adventure, start exploring your neighborhood parks. Strap on some snowshoes to go for a nature hike or treasure hunt; take a thermos of hot chocolate on the trek, so everyone can have a treat and warm up before going home.

Hiking up a hill is fun, but flying down one is even better. A truly great winter day requires a sled or snow tube and a long hill. Again, parks generally have the best hills close to home. Each kid has his own sledding style and preferred toy; discs and tubes offer faster runs while sleds give you more control.

When the kids aren't sliding down the hills, they can be sliding across the ice. A skating party requires more planning than a snowball fight, but it still fits into an afternoon or evening outing. Get figure skates for the whole family and hockey skates for the more daring. Balancing on skates builds strength and athletic skills, so skating helps children stay in shape until warm weather returns.

Do you still make snow angels if you get the chance? Share your ideas for enjoying a snowy day.
